dynamics-of-an-asteroid:

So, for reasons unbeknownst to myself, I decided to take some tweets from the SeaWall Q+A with Andrew today and add them to moments from Sherlock. For example:

Sherlock can’t find the words to apologize to John so he makes do with a picture.

#Sherlock sat by himself on the hills overlooking Dewer’s Hollow #Box of Crayola 64 in hand #This will make John forgive me- he thought.#He also drew Spiderman; a monster yorkshire pudding and Mycroft in a tutu

Mackintosh-style men’s coat, thrifted: $8 (“I’ll just chop the bottom off it and use that fabric for the pockets,” I said. Printedsoot laughed like I had proposed flying to England and stripping the coat off Martin Freeman’s back while he was on coffee break. “It can’t be that much work,” I said, “I mean it’s only pockets." "You are crazy," said printedsoot. "Just for the record.")

Vinyl and corduroy from a craft store remnants bin: $10 (“This black is too green!” I said. “You are crazy,” said printedsoot, dutifully inspecting the fabric glue.)

Time plotting out patterns, ripping out seams, cutting, sewing, and gluing: AHAHAHAohgod. (“You are CRAZY,” printedsoot said, watching me finish the last seam of the shoulder patches. “If this goddamn seam doesn’t fit right, I’m going to set this fucking coat on fire,” I said, “and then I’m going to put it on.”)

Getting to go to CONvergence dressed as my favorite character: priceless.

"Only pockets" roughly translated to:

  • making three pleated pockets and one other pocket from scratch, all of them with flaps, with no pattern to work from
  • removing four straps with buttons from the shoulders and wrists
  • sewing all of those pockets to the coat so they are actual functioning pockets
  • figuring out the vinyl patches on the shoulder and gluing them in place
  • hemming the coat and its sleeves so it actually fits my short proportions
  • stitching half the shoulder patches on by hand and half by machine
  • making a new collar in corduroy and sewing that on
  • cleaning off a tragic super glue spill with sand paper
  • attaching rivets/snaps on pockets between now and con, craft store hours willing
